Dear Parents and Education Advocates,

We are happy to announce Mark Powell as the new President of Parents for Quality Education (PQE) replacing Bret Caslavka who served as PQE President from 2017 -2019 and interim president in 2021 while PQE conducted its search for a new president.  “We are fortunate to have someone of Mark Powell’s caliber and experience step up to lead PQE,” states Caslavka.

Mark Powell is no stranger to education. Powell has 25 years of hands-on education experience as a classroom teacher, vice principal and dean of students. Powell was elected to the San Diego County Board of Education in June 2016 and served on the board for 4 years. Powell is a business owner and Adjunct University Professor teaching graduate-level courses in teacher education for National University.

While we were able to successfully establish Term Limits for San Diego Unified School Board Members in 2018 and District only Elections in 2020 our work to assure accountability and transparency is far from over and our efforts will continue to bring quality education to California’s 2nd largest school district.

We are at a critical moment in public education and there is much more to do, and we believe Mark Powell has the right communication and leadership skills needed to deliver PQE’s mission to ensure that every child receives a quality education.
